System Maintenance and Monitoring

It is generally good practice to monitor how your computer is doing, regarding both software and hardware. The software environment of a computer changes on a regular basis even if you don't add any new apps (or programs) due to many factors. Ways to maintain a healthy software environment include running regularly scheduled maintenance tasks such as Defragmenting the Hard Drive and cleaning out temporary Internet files, as well as keeping Anti Virus and Malware software updated.

Hardware can be quite a different story partially because it's not likely to see very many physical changes; however, it can be subject to many things that affect performance. Cleanliness of a computer, especially a laptop, is very important to keep proper airflow within the system. Heat is the enemy of any electronic equipment and dirty computers are subject to more heat being generated during normal operation. Power surges and improperly grounded power connections can cause problems, and these can be avoided with proper surge protection. The list is long, but there are monitoring and testing utilities you can use to help maintain a healthy hardware environment.
